Social Security contributions for curricular work placements

As a result of a change in the law, from January 2024 all students undertaking curricular work placements will have to make contributions to the Social Security system. The UAB will cover the management and cost of these Social Security contributions where the work placements are unpaid. Where the placements are paid both the management and cost will be borne by the company where the placement is being carried out.

To be able to manage inclusion in system for contribution periods you need to ensure that your Social Security number (NUSS) is included in your academic record. Please check your personal details as they appear in the UAB computer system and fill in your NUSS.

On the website of the Spanish Social Security system the acronym NSS is used, and this is the same as the NUSS which we refer to in our data bases for the management of your academic record.

If you have any questions about the NUSS or your contributions you can contact the General Treasury of the Social Security system on the following telephone numbers: 915410291 and 901502050. Please select the option “citizen”.

How to update your NUSS on your academic record

Go to https://sia.uab.cat and select the option “consult and print registration”. At the top on the right you will see your name. Scroll down and go to the option “My profile”. There you will find the personal details that want to update, among which is the NUSS. If the field is already filled in you do not need to do anything else. If the field is empty please fill in your number and remember to press “Save” before you log out.

Please note: the NUSS is not the same as your medical card number. It does not contain any letters, only numbers and it starts with the identifier for your province. e.g. for Barcelona it starts with 08.

If you have digital ID you can obtain information about your NUSS in one of two ways:

  1. Accreditation Service for an existing Social Security Number at the e-Office of the Social Security and the TGSS portal – Importass. Access to this service can be obtained via SMS, SMS, Clave PIN, Cl@ve Permanente and e-Certificate/DNIe.
  2. My Citizen Folder (Mi Carpeta ciudadana) application. Using this application students can only view their NUSS if they have been registered with the Social Security as a worker or related worker.
Assignment of an NUSS:

If you do not have a NUSS you can request one in the following ways:

1.      Using the “Request Social Security Number” service at the e-Office of the Social Security and the TGSS portal – Importass.

Access to this service is by SMS, SMS, Clave PIN, Cl@ve Permanente and e-Certificate/DNIe. You will need your identification number (DNI or NIE), contact details (mobile phone and email) and usual address.

2.      Using the “Send a request” command at the TGSS-Importass Portal (Select the Citizen/Worker category and then select Obtain an Affiliation Number).

You must be able to provide your identification document (DNI, NIE or passport), email address and Model TA.1 and have a mobile device with a camera available to take a photo of yourself. You can send this without the need for a signature.
