Adriana Kaplan awarded for her achievements

Lluís Companys Memorial Prize

The Lluís Companys Memorial Prize, conferred each year since 1991 by the Josep Irla Foundation, was this year awarded to UAB professor and director of the Wassu-UAB Foundation Adriana Kaplan, for her achievements in the fight against gender violence and female genital mutilation in particular. The prize was awarded to her on 11 May at the Ateneu Barcelonès.

The Lluís Companys Memorial Prize is awarded to a person or entity who stands out for their social actions. Nora Salas from the Wassu-UAB Foundation accepted the award in name of Kaplan, who is currently in Gambia working on trying to end female genital mutilation. This practice has harmful consequences for girls and women and is considered a violation of human rights.

The Josep Irla Foundation aims to continue the work of generations of Catalonians who, just like Josep Irla, have preceded us in the fight to build a more just and free society. It wishes to be a space for analysis, reflection and debate for the whole of the Catalan Countries (Catalonia, Valencia and Balearic Islands) in general and for social liberalists in particular. The foundation works according to the principles of democracy, freedom, social justice and the right to self-determination of all peoples.

DKV Prize in Medicine and Solidarity

Doctor Kaplan was also awarded a DKV Prize in Medicine and Solidarity for her professional trajectory. It is awarded in recognition to those people or entities from the medical sector who, through their solidarity, contribute to offering society an added value. The awards ceremony was held on Thursday 25May at 7 p.m. at the Pignatelli Building in Zaragoza.

The objective of the prize, which includes 10,000 Euros, is to offer the winners economic and media support to continue with their work and turn it into a means of health transformation. The awardees also received one of the works of Catalan artist Jordi Pallarés.
