Access to the PhD


You may apply to the UAB PhD Programmes from several curricular options:

 New Doctoral Studies (EHEA) 
PhD Programmes regulated by RD 778/1998

Official PhD studies aim to provide advanced training in research techniques, including writing and defending the Doctoral Thesis or Dissertation, which is an original research project.

This training may be structured through courses, seminars, or other research training activities (RD 56/2005).

Applicants from pre-RD 56/2005 PhD Programmes

PhD admission requirements:

  1. The applicant must meet one of the following conditions:

    a. To have completed the appropriate previous academic training (official Master degree).

    b. To hold a Master’s degree from an official university or the equivalent issued by a higher education institution of the European Area Higher Education Area.

    c. To hold a degree from a country outside the EHEA, provided such degree is equivalent to the official Spanish Master’s Degree..

     
  2. Each PhD programme will determine its own specific admission requirements .
     
  3. In all cases, the applicant must certify that:

    - the degree has been issued by a Spanish or by foreign university which enables the applicant to locally access the research stage of the PhD.

    - the Master has a minimum 60 credits, 15 of which must be research credits, provided 300 credits have been earned during undergraduate and graduate studies as a whole. If it were not possible to certify that a minimum of 15 ECTS credits of introduction to research have been earned, the student will have to register and complete the research module of the previous university Master. In such cases, admission to the PhD will be pending approval of this module.

General admission procedures:

  1. Admission must be requested to the department or institute in offering the PhD programme.
     
  2. The Studies Committee shall review the required documents, request a draft of the future dissertation project from the student, and submit it for approval.
     
  3. Once the Studies Committee grants admission, it must submit to the Graduate School:

    - The application form including the admission offer signed by the coordinator of studies and the student's dissertation supervisor. The form must state whether the student must take any additional credits to complete his or her training.

    - The documents submitted by the applicant (copies of degrees, transcripts, copy of DNI/passport).
     
  4. The Graduate School will review the documents and admission decision, which shall be signed by the Rector. This resolution shall be notified to the student by the Rector’s Representative for the Graduate School, and it shall be mailed by regular post to the student. The department/institute offering the PhD shall be notified as well.
     
  5. Once the candidate is admitted, the following procedures must be completed:

    1st) Registration at the Graduate School within a month. Please visit this link for details about this process: matrícula.

    2nd) Once you have been admitted, you need to register your PhD Thesis project within four months after the date of admission. Otherwise, your admission to the doctorate studies will be cancelled. When admission is completed after January 1 of each academic year, the time allocated to register your Thesis will be reduced to one month..
