The identification of HIV and its widespread occurrence around the world have produced qualitative and quantitative change in retrovirology research. Advances in the last 25 years have enabled knowledge of the virus to be extended and the stages of treatment defined as well as establishing the bases for developing vaccines and eradication strategies and making human retrovirology one of the most dynamic areas of biomedicine. Strong development in this area requires specialised professionals with broad knowledge in the areas of virology and immunology.
This Master's degree offers a broad view of these two aspects with a special focus on antiretroviral treatments and the two only ways of eradicating the virus: developing an effective vaccine and pharmacological approaches. In addition, special attention is given to other retroviruses and their potential implications for human pathologies. Given the experimental and international nature of this Master's degree, there will be a limited number of places during its first year, and students must be able to understand and express themselves in English.
Research into HIV is currently an international collaborative undertaking, and this Master's degree reflects that since it is organised jointly with Esteve, the Ragon Institute del Massachusetts General Hospital, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the Harvard University Medical School, where students will spend a period.
The program cost is 13,500 euros per student. However, the price of tuition students must take has been reduced to 6,500 euros finally thanks to a major grant from the Social Work Program of La Caixa.
