Cardiovascular illnesses are the principal cause of death in the world. Every year more people die of cardiovascular illness than any other cause. According to the WHO it is calculated than in 2005 cardiovascular illness killed 17.5 million people, representing a third of all deaths in the world: 7.6 million as a result of coronary cardiopathology and 5.7 million as a result of cerebrovascular accident.

It is calculated that in 2015 20 million people will die of cardiovascular illnesses and that it will continue to be the major cause of death.

In Catalonia illnesses related to the circulatory system constitute the primary cause of death in all health regions. Mortality as a result of this cause, according to the Catalonia Health Plan, increases with age and is the primary cause in women over 65 and men over 75.

The University Nursing School at the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau through the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona has been offering a postgraduate course in Nursing Care for Patients with Cardiac Problems for twelve years with expertise in the area of specific training for professionals of cardiac illness patient care.

The integration of general and specific competencies enables student to:

- form part of cardiology service teams.

- lead nursing consultancies that offer integral care for patients with cardiac problems (educating for more healthy lifestyles, treatment and care of wounds, administration and management of medication, control of vital signs and signs of alert, etc.)

- Care and attention for invasive treatments (heart surgery, haemodynamics, diagnostic techniques, etc.)
