The Spanish healthcare system is based on primary health care as the first step in the care system. 42% of doctors in the Spanish national health service offer primary level care.
34% of the offer of qualified doctor (MIR) posts are for family or community doctors. Approximately 96% of the 300 million consultations in Spain every year are dealt with by doctors and nurses in primary health care centres without the need for consultations with other areas or at other level.
Society demands social and health services at primary level that are of quality and are close to the public, accessible and respond to the needs of individuals, families and the community at large. Universities can contribute to responding to these needs by creating and offering multidisciplinary postgraduate training programmes aimed at the different professionals who make up the Primary Healthcare Service in Catalonia.
