What courses are available for mobility students?

We offer a wide range of courses for mobility students. Catalan courses are subsidised 100% up to the second level, and Spanish courses are subsidised 50%.

What courses are offered at UAB Idiomes Barcelona?

The following courses are offered at the centre:

  • general courses: English, French and German
  • conversation courses: English
  • senior courses: English
  • official exam preparation courses: FCE and CAE
  • special interest courses: Learning English through Cinema and Learning English through Literature
  • Spanish intensive courses

Can I just come to study Spanish?

Intensive Spanish courses are offered  in the Barcelona centre, for anyone who wants to come to Barcelona to learn Spanish, even if you are not studying at the UAB. These courses are not subsidised by the University.

What is Basic Comprehension in Catalan?

This is a Catalan course with the following characteristics:

1. Aimed at students who already know at least one Romance language (Spanish, French, Italian, Rumanian, etc.)

2. The studies are based on the intercomprehension of Romance languages.

3. The course focuses on reading and oral comprehension.

4. This is a shock-therapy and survival course for students who want a fast-track language learning experience in a university environment.

5. This course does not prevent students from continuing their studies in Catalan at basic or first level.

Which languages can I study at UAB Idiomes?

Catalan, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese and Spanish.

Do I have to take a level test before signing up for a course?

Students who cannot demonstrate the level in the language they wish to study will have to take a test to determine their level. There are fixed periods for these tests, which take place a few days before the start of the courses. Please see the calendar in the document at the foot of the page. There is no charge for these tests and no obligation to sign up for the course.

Can I get elective credits for these courses?

Almost all courses and activities offered by the Language Service enable you to obtain elective credits. The credits recognised by the Language Service takes university subjects into account and up to 100% of the elective credits for the syllabus can be obtained. Remember, though, that you can only get 9 elective credits recognised per academic year. What kind of courses are on offer?

There are three types of courses:

  • Attendance-based: these are teacher-led courses that take place in physical classrooms in the centre. 
  • Bi-modal: these are structured courses which combine assistance-based learning with distance learning. They are often known as blended learning courses. 
  • E-learning: these course take place through a virtual campus, using multimedia teaching materials for virtual and distance learning.

Are any of the courses designed for independent learning?

Yes. Many of the educational activities encourage independent learning, in accordance with the recommendation of the European Council and the orientation of the EHEA We have a physical learning centre - the Centre for Independent Language Learning - in the Humanities library of the Bellaterra campus, where the attendance-based sessions for these courses usually take place.
