Documents:
All documents must be presented in one of the official languages (Spanish or Catalan) and where this is not possible originals in other languages that have been duly legalized (Form 37) will be accepted if they are accompanied by a sworn translation.
Whether you begin the renewal process at the UAB (IWP) or directly at the government department, you will need to present the following documentation:
1. Residence tax: The TAX must be paid before presenting the renewal application and a copy must be provided of the receipt of payment along with the other documentation. Paying the tax does not automatically imply that renewal has been granted but it is not possible to favourably resolve the application unless it can be shown that the corresponding fees have been paid. If you have any problems downloading this PDF, you will also find the document at the end of this page.
2. Official Form Ex-00 (original + 1 copies) YOU MUST FILL IN ALL THE FIELDS USING A TYPEWRITER OR COMPUTER. HANDWRITTEN FORMS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. If you have problems downloading this link, you can find the document at the bottom of this page.
3. Photocopy of passport
4. Photocopy of Authorised Stay Permit (Tarjeta de Autorización de Estancia) (both sides)
5. Photocopy of Authorised Stay Permit of the person who offers the right of the relative to visit.
6. Passport sized photograph (1)
7. Marriage or birth certificate
8. For children, certificate of school attendance in Spain
9. Proof of economic means. The head of the family must be able to offer proof of that they have the necessary economic means to maintain a family. 10. Photocopy of the medical insurance policy that covers illness and accidents during the whole stay in Spain as well as the medical expenses. With the new immigration law coming into effect at the end of June 2011, the registration in the Spanish Social Security System is accepted as medical insurance. If you have a private medical insurance and this document is from outside of European Union it has to be in Spanish, specifying the amount in Euro and it has to be legalized by the Spanish Consulate in the country of origin.
With the new immigration law it is NOT necessary anymore to dispose of a repatriation insurance in order to apply for the renewal of the NIE, although it is strongly recommended to have this insurance as it is not covered by social security.
IMPORTANT NOTE: It is essential that you present your renewal application at least 15 days in advance of the expiry date for your NIE. Even if you do not have all the documentation, your application must be registered on time. You can present any outstanding documentation at a later date. Please note: this option is only available in cases of renewal.
