The European Higher Education Area was created with the following objectives:
1. Promote mobility for students, graduates and academics throughout Europe.
2. Enable new graduates to integrate into the single European labour market.
3. Provide students with the knowledge and strategies required for lifelong learning.
To achieve these objectives, the following actions must be taken in all EU countries:
1. The higher education systems of the different countries must be harmonised.
2. Adapt the structure, content and defining of skills on which learning results are based.
The new European Higher Education System will have:
1. Shorter courses: a First Degree that will replace the current distinction between Spanish Diplomas and Degrees, providing students with quicker access to the labour market and better preparation.
2. A specialisation course(postgraduate or master).
The structure already approved in most European countries is that of a three-year first degree consisting of 180 ECTS credits and a two-year postgraduate degree consisting of 120 ECTS credits, known as the 3+2 system.
