EHEA structure

Structure of the courses

University education courses leading up to degrees recognised officially by the Spanish State will now be structured in three cycles: Graduate Degree, Master's Degree and Doctorate.
 Graduate degree
Master's degree
Doctorate

EHEA degrees provide students with a general training aimed at preparing them for future professional activities. The official title awarded upon completion of these studies is "graduate".

Entry access
To enrol in an official degree students must hold a second education certificate or equivalent, and must have passed the University Entrance Exams (PAU).
All universities must offer accessible information, orientation and welcoming systems for first-time students. These systems must include adequate assessment and support mechanisms for disabled students with specific educational needs.

Structure of credits and courses
Students must complete 240 ECTS credits in order to obtain a degree. These 240 credits comprise all of the student's theoretical and practical training: basic aspects belonging to the area of knowledge, compulsory and optional modules, work placements, supervised course projects, final project and other academic activities. Before completing their studies, the student must present a final project.

Each university proposes to which area of knowledge a degree belongs:
- Arts and the Humanities
- Sciences
- Health Sciences
- Social and Legal Sciences
- Engineering and Architecture

The UAB model
EHEA degrees last four academic years (60 ECTS credits per year). Each academic course will be structured in the following manner:

First year
Students will attend compulsory basic training modules.

Second and third years
These two years correspond to the core modules of the degree and are made up of compulsory modules. In degrees where work placements are compulsory, these will be carried out during the third year.

Fourth year
The last year consists in complementary training and optional modules, and a final project.

Optional credits can be made up of:

  • Optional modules from the same degree.
  • Modules belonging to a Minor within the same degree. Students taking a minimum of 30 ECTS credits - all belonging to one Minor - will receive the European Diploma Supplement with the name of the Minor included.
  • Modules attended at other universities in Spain or abroad.
  • Modules from a Minor syllabus. Universities will offer a series of Minors by area of knowledge, thereby facilitating students the possibility to create part of their own syllabus according to their interests and future projects.Minors consist in complementary training in a different area to that of the degree the student is enrolled in. By passing a minimum of 30 ECTS credits the student will receive the European Diploma Supplement.
  • Validation of a maximum of six credits for participating in cultural, sports, solidarity and cooperation activities.
  • Validation of a maximum of eight credits in language courses.

Degrees in regulated professions
Degrees corresponding to regulated professions (in the case of UAB Medicine and Veterinary Medicine) differ in their number of credits and academic years, since they have been adapted to the conditions established by the Spanish Ministry for Science and Innovation and European regulations. The degree in Medicine will continue to consist of six academic years and 360 ECTS credits. The degree in Veterinary Medicine will consist of 300 ECTS credits, which is equivalent to five academic years.
