SHORT CURRICULUM

She is an Anthropologist, a Professor of Health Anthropology in the Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) and the Principal Investigator of the Interdisciplinary Research Group for the Prevention and Study of Harmful Traditional Practices (GIPE/PTP).

Her research career is based on the study of migrations from the Sub-Saharan Africa and on the anthropological analysis of acculturation and social integration processes from a gender, circular and transnational perspective.

Since 1987, she has been carrying out field work in The Gambia, Senegal and Guinea Bissau about aspects related to health issues, especially, sexual and reproductive health.

In The Gambia, she has been an Associated Researcher of the Medical Research Council, consultant of the Women's Bureau and of various international agencies ( UNFPA, UNDP, UNICEF, EU) regarding Female Genital Mutilation issues.

In Spain, she has been a consultant and a team member for different local and autonomous institutions regarding social integration policies related to migration.

Among her publications there are several articles and books of which we can highlight Migración, Cultura y Alimentación (1999) and De Senegambia a Cataluña: procesos de aculturación e integración social (1998), which was awarded the 10th Dr. Rogeli Duocastella Award in Social Sciences by La Caixa Foundation.

Concerning audiovisual productions, she directed two documentaries "Gambia, ciclo vital y supervivencia" (1991) and "Initiation without Mutilation" (2004) that brings an alternative and innovative methodological approach on the ritual of female genital mutilation. This documentary has been adopted as the official proposal of the Government of The Gambia and translated into five local languages, in addition to Spanish, Catalan and English.

In 2008, she has been awarded the International Prize for Solidarity, by the Government of Navarre.

In the framework of the Transnational Observatory of Applied Research to New Strategies for the Prevention of FGM/C, with the support of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare (Republic of The Gambia), the University of The Gambia, the World Health Organization, the United Nations Population Fund and UNICEF, she organized the first International Forum on Harmful Traditional Practices, “Exploring strategies and good practices. From local to global”, held in Brufut, The Gambia, May 5-7 th 2009.

From January of 2009, she has been granted the first Chair of Social Knowledge Transfer in Spain (Parc de Recerca UAB- Santander) for her applied research career of more than twenty years in the field of acculturation and social integration processes of the migrations, sexual and reproductive health, and, in particular, female genital mutilation.
